Adam Price has been working as a free-lance cartoonist for the last five years.
He has recently returned from spending three months living in Central America, and has found a lot of inspiration in the artwork and iconography of the Mayan People.
"Central America has such a dynamic integration of cultures and influences, American, Spanish, West Indian and the original Maya, you can't help but be swept up with the energy and passion of the area."
"A lot of people that i meet have the preconception that pre-columbian art is 'blocky' and angular, when i show them how elegant and fluid the 'glyphs used by the Maya were, they are suprised. The kind of smooth economy shown in the Maya Stele and writings are far more what we associate with the far east and Asia, and it is this elegance that i want to bring to my work. To be frank I am less concerned with what the Glyphs I reproduce mean, than how they look."
"For the Maya, writing was never intended for mass comunication. Their written language consisted of at least three alphabets (although perhaps 'fonts' would be a better word) all of which could be used randomly in the same sentence depending upon what looked the most attractive. For the Maya, they were writing to the gods rather than the people, and the gods would know how to read what was written. So in my defence, i select the glyphs that look most attractive just as the Maya did!"
