Artist Afsheen Nasir

Afsheen was born and grew up in Karachi, Pakistan where she developed an interest in art at a very early age. Having won a number of awards and medals for art at school and college, she subsequently trained for a short time under the famous Pakistani artist, Iqbal Mehdi.

Afsheen's pictures are about seeing, looking, feeling. Sources of stimuli are complex, ranging from the familiar landscapes where the play of light infiltrates the sub-conscious and provides an escape, to the mundane interiors brought to life through the interplay of light. The theory of colour has grown increasingly important, bordering on an obsessive desire to experiment. In practice this has evolved through migrating from painting exactly what is seen to a desire to express the emotion that is evoked by looking at an object. This is obtained through the process of underpainting and layering with washes to help achieve optimum colour values, control and interaction without worrying about the rules of painting too much. The idea is to try and capture the emotion of the moment and somehow evoke the same in the viewer.
