 I am a self taught artist who has always painted, either in oil, acrylic or watercolour. However, about ten years ago a gallery asked if I could draw, as they were getting a lot of enquiries for pencil drawings. I had never produced drawings as finished artwork before but gave it a go and was surprised to find that I was not only better at drawing than painting, but enjoyed it much more. I particularly enjoy pencil’s precision and ability to depict intricate detail, and since then I have concentrated solely on drawing. Subject matter has been based purely on things that interest me: aircraft (I used to fly aerobatics), animals and birds, architecture and just recently still life. This year I discovered the remarkable capabilities of coloured pencil. I am particularly fascinated by light and how it can transform otherwise mundane objects into something special. Most of my subjects therefore depict bright sunlight with a resultant strong pattern of light and shade. Taking this fascination with light and shade further, I am currently exploring the interplay of light as it is reacts with transparent and reflective materials such as glass, liquids and metals, and coloured pencils are perfect for this. I have spent a lot of time experimenting with different kinds of pencils, papers and techniques before deciding on the combination that suits me.
My fascination with light and shade, contrasts and colour has also inspired me to produce abstract art that explores the same basic themes as the drawings. I thoroughly enjoy exploring colours, shapes and textures for their own sake and without restriction as a change from the photo-reality of the drawings, and the beauty of these artworks is that not only can they be produced on a variety of surfaces and in a range of sizes, but also hung any way up! In order for them not to look "upside down", they are not signed in the usual bottom corner but instead are signed either in the margin (if on paper) or on the reverse (if on canvas).
