I take inspiration from the light flooding the wide open spaces of the essex east coast estuaries. I have turned my attention to the saltmarsh, a part of the landscape of my childhood that has always captivated me; outside the sea defences, more land than sea; yet closely entwined with, and dependent on the tide for its very existence. The saltmarsh holds an air of melancholy, a forgotten and seemingly uninviting place; for me this special landscape invokes a deep sense of peace.
Using expressive marks, I try to convey the colours and textures of the saltmarsh, coastal fringes and surrounding areas. Large canvases allow me to feel totally immersed in the landscape as I work.
