Despite having paintings in private collections in the USA, the UK, France, Israel and South Africa, Andrew is entirely self-taught, having begun drawing as a child and first dabbled in oil paints at the age of 17.
Andrew spent his childhood and young adulthood in Africa, for which we can probably thank his enduring interest for exploring the effects of sunlight in his work, even in northern hemisphere subjects. He still tackles the occasional African Wildlife masterpiece, but is as comfortable doing English and European Landscapes, Seascapes and Railways, with the occasional portrait on commission.
Andrew is also an accomplished linguist, having spent a year studying in France, and he often tries to incorporate an element of the impressionist masters in his style. Influences include the classic impressionists, especially Pissarro, but he also greatly admires the contemporary practitioners such as Peter Fiore (USA), Richard Robinson (New Zealand), Herman Pekel and Colley Whisson (Australia), although Andrew's style usually adds a touch of judicious realism.
Having settled in Berkshire, where he finds much inspiration from the surrounding Chiltern Hills, he works from a combination of sketches painted 'en plein air' , photographs and instinct. His railway art is a departure from the looser landscapes, which are usually done 'alla prima', and allows him to indulge in some precise research and drawing.
