Angela Melkis

Born in Coventry, I lived for may years surrounded by the wonderful agricultural landscape of Warwickshire, which is often the inspiration for my paintings. Since moving to Hampshire I have become inspired more by colours of the local land and seascapes. My work is not an attempt to give a photographic representation of the subject, but to capture the initial first impression it gave me. Be it the line, colour or texture that first interested me, I will hold the image in my head, and paint it from memory when I return to my studio. With very few reference sketches or photographs, I find I have more freedom to use my memory and imagination. This helps me to create a more simplified image, which is a delicate balance between abstract and representational. I also often play with the colour, perspective and space within the picture, which helps to achieve an uncluttered image of what remains in the mind’s eye after first seeing the subject. My style is becoming more impressionistic and loose, with bold use of colour. It shows the direction my landscapes are taking.... I like to describe it as “nature idealised”. My paintings have been exhibited in galleries across the UK, including juried exhibitions at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Past Exhibitions include: Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Birmingham, West Midlands. Knapp Gallery, Regents College, London The White Space Art Gallery, Greenwich Market, London. ‘The Affordable Art Fair’, Battersea Park, London. The Wonderwall Gallery, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Artifex, The Mitchell Centre, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. ‘Birmingham Art Fair’, Gas Hall, Birmingham. The Art Works, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Obsidian Art Gallery, Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire. Rugby Open, Rugby Art Gallery & Museum, Warwickshire. 'Solent Art Fair', Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth Harbour. Warwickshire Art Week 2006, The Coombe Gallery, Coombe Country Park, Coventry, West Midlands.
