 My journey to the world of painting was long and filled with obstacles. Starting with an educational environment in Greece opposed to any kind of art form, followed by a degree in sociology, postgraduate degree in criminology, a trip around Europe and Self Discovery, ending up in a shared studio in Jericho, Oxford, and a new beginning.
For the last seven years I have been painting and staging my own exhibitions, and lately I have been sharing my time between being an artist and an antiques dealer as a way of making a living.
Artist's Statement
"My work begins from the inner need I have to express beauty. I always loved the crafts: glass painting, tile painting, jewellery, and mosaics; I am fascinated by the Arts and Crafts, and Aesthetic movements, Art Nouveau, and the work of Gustav Klimt, whose paintings and murals are highly decorative with large-scale use of gold leaf. I have also been attracted by the detail and decoration of illuminated manuscripts.
My inspiration is derived from geometric and decorative designs, textiles and architecture from great ancient civilisations such as Greece and the Orient. I also try to capture the vibrant colour of Mediterranean culture, drawing on my experiences of life in Greece, and travelling in Europe and Morocco.
Creating paintings is an amazing process for me; I feel intrigued and inspired by the effect of the different colours and materials combining together. While I work more ideas for combinations, colours and designs form in my head spurring me on. I enjoy exploring the colours and how they interact, especially using gold to produce shimmering effects and cern relief to achieve jewel-like textures. Colour and decoration take priority, combining with patterns, shapes and lines to create a meditative harmony.
I start my ideas on a small-scale design, where I can experiment and innovate, before I translate my ideas into larger scale works. I have a constant need for experimentation, learning and development; my vision is for my work to continue to grow in scale, becoming more representational whilst remaining highly decorative."
