Born in East Africa, my early years were spent in relative poverty but I was surrounded by the wealth and richness of the natural world. This is where my interest in the human condition, affinity with nature and love of the wildlife began. The first seedings for my art were sown, as I started to notice the sharp contrast between the beauty and the ugly in the world that surrounded me, something within me stirred to create...
Essentially a self-instructed artist, I feel there is nothing more satisfying than to create a piece of art which imparts expression, ignites awareness and kisses the inner being. I have travelled all over the world, and have lived in East Africa, Hong Kong, Canada, United Kingdom and currently reside in Dubai. Through my journey, exposure and observation, I have developed a keen awareness, natural appreciation and understanding of the human struggle and the world at large. My art is born primarily from my experience, imagination and emotions, thus I have the luxury to concentrate on the overall impact and meaning of the piece. Art to me is all about the drama of life, the song and the dance of it. There is a satisfaction in creating powerful paintings that are visually engaging, expressive and intuitive. I believe, the creative process has at it's core a contemplative, spiritual understanding that can never truly be mastered, there will always be new discoveries to grasp, new encounters to be had and new creations to be made.
I work predominantly in acrylic paint and acrylic ink, as this medium affords me the flexibility to produce paintings a myriad of styles, however, I do not wish to confine myself to any particular medium and enjoy using watercolours, graphite & colour pencils, oil paints and pastels. With Abstract, Monochrome and Surreal paintings, I explore the essence of the human condition. My inspiration comes from the love and desire the human heart searches, the hope and success we strive for, and the tragedy and failure that surrounds us. In Floral and Landscape paintings, I am often not trying to accurately depict but rather, attempting to capture the beauty, uniqueness and ambiance of the subject; it is not a matter of rendering meticulously but to express desire, reflect spiritual hunger and portray peaceful co-existence. In the Portrait paintings, I seek to capture more than the likeness of the sitter, I am looking to immortalize the intangibles such as individuality, essence and spirit of the sitter. My subject matter also includes the occasional visual explosion of Still Life, that puts everyday, mundane objects in an innovative and idealistic light. Amongst other things, I explore the challenges of capturing the splendour of water and light, from the energy of crashing waves and waterfalls, to the serenity of still waters in lakes and ponds.
