Ben Porter

Artist Ben PorterI was born in North London and then spent my childhood and formative years in rural Kent at the foot of the North Downs. I enjoyed a sensitive and imaginative upbringing, always taking an active interest in visual arts, culture and with an active appreciation of natural and urban states. Expressing myself through painting and writing from an early age. Although I studied art at school to A-Level and then commenced a degree course within Humberside University's 'Visual Arts, Media and Fine Art Faculty' I am largely self taught and have a style that is quite organic and and untamed. Having travelled extensively to near and far flung places, I have unconsciously obsorbed colours, light and styles that I incorporate into my personal style of painting. To this end I have always perceived my environment from a very visual perspective. Moving to Manchester, I have made it my home since 1995 and find it a very inspirational place to live and work. I have explored different creative outlets, although painting for me has always been the most satisfying medium for me in which to express myself and as such has provided me the narrative for my life. I would imagine that my usual style is abstract, utilising vivid colour to express emotion and thought, normally in the form of acrylic on canvass, although food stuffs and other exotic materials have also been used at points! I have also expressed myself through still life and landscape imagery. My painting provides me with a very personal means of expressing myself and provides me with an outlet for my frustrations, hopes, fears and joy. I sometimes find it diffucult to explain in a coherent way what the paintings mean to me as they are so personal and based upon internalised feelings and emotions. I also prefer the viewer to have a genuine and personal emotional reaction to my paintings that is not limited by my personal take on a work. This said, I am always happy to try and explain my thought processes behind each piece. I have so far found homes for some of my works in places like Manchester, London, Wrotham, Poole, Bournemouth and Bangkok. Thank you for your interest in my work.
