When I paint, I start with an idea, but quickly let go of my preconception, until the freedom, play, emotion, and energy of the moment take over. The canvas becomes a playground for the tug of war between figure and abstraction, my expression, and the insistent nature of the paint itself.
The exploration of so many possibilities, expectations, frustrations, and surprises, is what makes the process of creating each painting so absorbing. Each work of art demands I pay attention, stay in the moment, and enter into a new relationship.
Ultimately, I find the allure of painting its great mystery, and one that may never be solved. To surrender to that mystery without fear is the challenge.
