I’m a Yorkshire lass that has always loved to create. I was at my most happiest as a child when working on projects that involved a great deal of cutting and sticking and using flour and water home made glue. Every ‘Blue Peter’ project was attempted to varying degrees of success. This progressed to more serious stuff and art college where I studied graphic arts and eventually got myself a career in advertising. So far so good, but there is nothing quite as satisfying as being given the opportunity to paint for a living. So I now work in a converted barn studio in the Yorkshire countryside where each day brings a new idea or creation and a lot of pleasure. I hope to pass some of that joy on in my work.
I like experimental techniques and love surprises. It is an exciting way of working. I like to break the rules with my colour palette, often creating unusual combinations and results. I have developed a technique that results in ‘one of a kind’ artworks that cannot be replicated. This painting method is very unforgiving as I only get one chance. Once the paint touches canvas, I allow it to free flow and dry naturally. It cannot be re-painted. The technique requires overnight drying before I can see a glimpse of how the painting will turn out. In the morning, I literally dash into my studio in anticipation of the results. Sometimes, I am thrilled, especially as I cannot always tell which canvas will produce the best results.
My current series is inspired by mineral and fossilised forms. I have then added surreal and abstract elements so that only a hint of the original source is captured in the final artwork.
