 Charliejoye is the creative lovechild of Charles McLaren. Graphic designer by trade, Charles graduated the Jamaica School of Art circa 1969 and then arrived in the UK in 1976 for a post graduate stint at Central St Martins.
After graduation, Charles worked in the communications and advertising industry for several years ranging from campaigns for organisations such as Saatchi & Saatchi to the Health Education Office.
Still a freelance graphic designer, Charles has broadened his creative sphere and began painting 4 years ago. His style is an eclectic mix of graphic boldness and contemporary abstract. Inspired by a visceral interpretation of the world – his work often reflects his vast collection of memories, travels love of nature and colour. Charles has recently begun sharing his work and engaging spirit by facilitating art workshops.

He explores the contrasting themes of Space and Time and experiments with textiles and eclectic materials, Charliejoye creates a range of contemporary abstract paintings, ranging on medium and large scale canvasses.
Inspired by the actual process of creating his work as well as the aesthetic, Charliejoye’s paintings are the reflective journey of the artists’ moods and interests at the given time, expressing the emotional landscape of the human condition.
Charliejoye’s approach to his work is conceptual while always allowing the process to organically evolve. He is hesitant to let his own perspective cloud the viewer’s interpretation, as in his own words he encourages you to “Observe, let your imagination flow.’
