Kerrecoes' work, frequently abstract, invariably focuses on the concept of identity. He seems driven by a desire to understand who he is and what makes him that person. The ‘series of lines’ motif (the ‘code’) that he employs refers to his intense interest in genetics and DNA. His work is a complex language of abstract pattern and colour, an attempt at visualising the conflict between genetically produced instincts and free-will.
Is he little more than a machine, programmed to function in an extremely specific way? Is his identity just an elaborate illusion, the result of billions of chemical reactions? How much of what he considers to be his ‘self’ is spontaneous and how much is programmed?
Kerrecoe became a full-time Visual Artist in 2004, after abandoning a successful career as a Building Designer. In 2007/8 he collaborated with the disabled Artist Esther Appleyard on a joint project entitled 'A Series Of Lines' which was shown at Three Cups Gallery in Ely during 2007, and then again for two months at the prestigious Worcester City Museum in 2008.
He has since written articles for several art magazines as well as art-based correspondence diploma courses at NCFE Level 4. His first book, ‘SELF: Self-portraits from around the world’ was published in 2009 by Beautiful Cariad Books and he wrote a student guidebook for the Open College Of The Arts called ‘The Artist As Entrepreneur’ before that.
Kerrecoe’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout UK since 2005 and his work is held nationally and internationally in private & public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Wales and the Ray Johnson Permanent Collection in New York. He enjoys representation from several galleries, dealers and agencies, including Siott Gallery in Reading & Alpha Art Gallery in Edinburgh.
