After originally studying Fine Art I have spent most of my career to date involved with design, particularly graphic design, running for several years my own design studio. In recent years I have concentrated more on painting. At the moment I work primarily with a mix of acrylic, watercolour and gouache on board/paper. In stylistic terms, I would describe my work as lyrical abstraction.
In terms of constructing my works, I am interested in exploring transparency and overlay, with the ambition to achieve both luminosity and movement, using in the main high key and saturated colours. Achieving a certain exuberance and playfulness is also an important consideration for me. Though my paintings are devoid of any mimetic purpose, I find those that work best evoke certain moods or even places, and often the title of the work becomes crucial, enabling the viewer to discern some sense of meaning or 'way in' to the work.
