I first started carving with my Grandfather when I was about 12 years of age, and the first thing I carved was a Red Indian letter opener (I wish that I still had that piece, but over the years it unfortunately was mislaid).
I didn't pick a chisel up for carving for another 31years, even though I had been doing other things with wood (turning etc).
In 1993 I entered the "British National Wood Worker Show" that was held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, Esher, Surrey, and won a "Gold Medal" for my work. This was definitely a highlight for me, and I caught the carving bug.
I was also awarded a Gold Medal and two Bronze Medals from the "Bexley & District Craft Guild".
There are three examples of my commissioned work detailed below:-
A from a charity in Kenya needed carved coat hangers as patterns for the local wood carvers to copy.
Geoffrey Marsh MBE from the "British Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineers" commissioned me to carve their coat of arms on an antique Boxwood Dresser.
I was approached by the Angel TV Company to produce a Date Plaque for their documentary series called “Hidden House History” on the “History Channel”. The Plaque was made for a Medieval Farmhouse “The Murrells” in the Gravesham area of Kent. The farmhouse was found to be three hundred years older, after Dendro dating some of the wooden beams of the house.
The Plaque was to be presented to the owner of the house after completing filming.
I am always pleased and interested to receive commissions, and view them as a challenge.
Some of my portraits are based on the Art Nouveau work of Alphonse Mucha, (My Logo is an example). Mucha's work became synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement in the 1900’s. The portraits are normally carved from Lime, the other details are made from a variety of exotic woods.
