Artist Debbie BennettHaving completed a foundation in Art and Design at Bournville College of Art, Birmingham, Debbie moved to Brighton working to gain a BA Honours Degree in Illustration. Following her education she became involved in community arts, holding a lead role and facilitating many projects over the years. For almost 9 years Debbie has managed an inclusive service for vulnerable adults, supporting Arts development within the service. Aiming to empower those excluded within our society; Debbie supports well a team of committed staff providing support for 55 adults in Brighton and Hove. Debbie's job is to to co-ordinate workshops and exhibitions for Artists who experience Mental Health Illness and/or Learning Difficulties. 'I am always inspired by the incredible strength revealed by the people I support. Their will to survive is wholly admirable, I see an enduring determination to cope despite immense challenges, complex feelings and the diverse situations faced. Art is an amazing and therapeutic communication tool for many individuals that access our service, I feel privileged to support such a journey'. Throughout her career within Social Care and Arts Debbie has always painted. As a practising Artist she has been involved in exhibiting and selling her own works for almost 6 years. Debbie has 2 young children, both of whom excel in Artistic skill and creative ability. Debbie's work is inspired by her experiences and interactions with individuals that see and feel the world in different ways, individuals that because of illness or disability, often process and react in more intuitive ways, being led by feelings, emotions, and instinct. Debbie has explored her own feelings and ideas, focusing on symbolism and hidden meaning; connecting feelings and ideas with colour, nature and botany. 'I love the way that others interpret my paintings, in very individual and personal ways. This is the beauty of using colour to communicate, I find the endless possibilities of nature and experience so wonderfully motivating.'
