Dominic Blake

Hi Thank you for visting my profile... ...Born on the 07/05/1978 in Derbyshire, UK and raised in the rural bougher of Staffordshire. I have always been creative from the finger paintings at nursery through to the landscape paintings I do today. The truth is I am always consious of everything around me, whether I am painting a canvas or designing a logo these things inspire me. From a very early age I knew I was destined to be an artist or designer in one way or another. This was also confirmed in school when I realised that I didn't have much of an interest for any other subjects. In 1994 I was finishing my GCSE's when I was offered the opportunity to embark on a 1 year Intermediate GNVQ course in art & design. By 1995 I had completed my course and obtained a merit qualification, I undertook various methods of working and used mediums such as; water colour, acrylic, oils, inks, pastels, screen printing, etching..ect. From 1995-1997 I went back to sixth form for a where I undertook an advanced GNVQ course in art & design and obtained a merit qualification. My skills were really starting to shine through and I was beginning to bloom has an artist. By the end of the 2 years I had developed a postive portfolio of art work and design pieces and was soon to realise that it would be this portfolio that would secure an unconditional place at University. One subject that opened a new creative direction for me was Graphic Design, it was here where I learnt how to use the Apple Mac to create images digitally without getting my hands dirty. By 1997 I was gearing myself towards a career as an artist/designer when I was offered a firm placement for a 3 year BA (hons) Graphic Design course at Staffordshire University. This was a very proud moment for me and my family and opened a new chapter in my life. While studying my degree I was introduced to photography, animation, 3D modelling, product design, electronic design and typography. These subjects were very new to me but helped develop me into a more skilful creative. In 2000 I graduated with honours and set about searching for work in a very competitive market. I decided to take some time out to relax from all the education I had been through, as I was 21 years old and hadn't had a break from schooling since I started. In 2001 I landed myself a job with a local Graphic Design company where I worked for 12 months. I worked on various brochure and corporate campaigns but something was missing. I felt that my ideas were not my own and that all design processes were shared amongst the team. In 2003 I decided to relocate to Manchester (UK) where I worked has a freelance designer. I produced various works, mainly logo's for small/start up businesses and flyers for bars and nightclubs. I was soon to realise that I wanted to paint again, I found that the work I was doing was to restricted, to precise and craved the freedom of a white canvas. With very little money coming in I had to get full time work where I undertook various sales roles and working on my paintings in my spare time. Now I have some time out from work and my goal during this time is to focus my efforts on being creative in the hope I can earn recognition as an artist. Education 1992-1994-6 GCSE's-Thomas Alleynes High School 1994-1995-Merit qualification/Intermediate GNVQ course in Art & Design-Thomas Alleynes High School 1995-1997-Merit Qualification/Advanced GNVQ course in Art & Design-Thomas Alleynes High School 1997-2000-BA (Hons) Graphic Design-Staffordshire University Best materials to work with; I never restrict myself to certain materials/mediums but my favourite medium is Oils. Main style of working/what I like to paint; I don't really have a style has such..I feel that I am quite versatile and that my style changes depending on what I am painting and the medium I am using. I pretty much paint anything at the moment but I do love painting sunsets, the moon light, seas, skies and landscapes. I am enjoying producing portraits as this is one area that I haven't really explored before. I am always trying to better myself as an artist and the more I paint a particular style the better I become at it. I also accept commissions so if there is anything that you would like me to create for you please let me know. These are original paintings which are signed by myself and if you are interested in buying the original pieces then please let me know.
