I created the name Favello from my name, Francis Veillot. I began my career back in France where I was born in Rochefort Sur Mer. From a young age I sketched; I sketched too much at school which at times got me into trouble, particularly when sketching caricatures of my tutors!
I attended a Catholic school that was regimented to the extreme which for me was a real challenge. I used my sketching to distract me from what was a difficult environment for any budding artist. My skills were encouraged by my grandfather who called me his ‘Little Picasso’. I was embarrassed by this when he referred to it in public but, of course, I understood his biased opinion. My Grandfather in particular loved my Les Poulbot ‘Titi Parisien’ sketches which in the late 70s early 80s were all the rage. My Grandfather was from the Le Marais Poitevin region known as the green Venice, which in the 90s inspired my first set of landscapes. I was always sketching, my art was a way of life, part of the norm, and I could never separate it from my daily activities.
I am completely self-taught; I never studied. I didn’t see my gift as a career choice but as a distraction from the world around me, as a means of escape from the demands of a regimented upbringing.
People have always said that they can spot my work. Maybe it’s because it looks unpolished and untrained. I think I would describe my style as untrained and unpolished, too. My pictures live in parallel to my diverse life, they show distinctive images and in most cases real life. I particularly like to paint people, especially the eyes. I really try and capture the soul of a person through the eyes. I like to create pictures that show a journey and have a purpose, always demonstrating a snap shot of my life.
I am proud of every piece of work. I know it’s probably a cliché but every piece is from my heart. I have a passion for life and my art has supported my life. So I guess it would be right to say that I am most proud of my life and what I have sacrificed in many countries in support of the people. My life/my travel to date is definitely my best work.
