I attended the HIGH School of ART IN Manchester, after which I served an apprenticeship in Wallpaper and Textile Design. I eventually started my own business engraving wallpaper, printing cylinders. This involved two Art studio’s employing twelve Artists working on complex and intricate design work. In 1988 I decided to sell off my business interests and concentrate on what I most wanted to do. Portrait painting.
During my years as a Portrait Artist I have painted or produced Caricatures of hundreds of People or their Animals. Amongst the more famous of my subjects are Sir Cyril Smith, David Beckham, Eric Cantana, and Sir Clive Lloyd. After painting Sir Clive, he asked me to paint his Family Portrait. I was particularly honoured to be asked by Peter Brook, shortly before he died, to paint his portrait, along with his dog.
As well as being commissioned to paint the whole of the Manchester United treble cup winning squad, I was asked to paint the Centenary montage, depicting footballers going back 100years to present day, for both Manchester City and Huddersfield Town. I have illustrated Plates and Tankards for most of the Rugby League Clubs to commemorate their Centenary Year. From this came my most prestigious pottery commission, to design a limited edition plate and tankard to Celebrate “ THE END OF AN ERA “ The pulling down of Wembley Stadium.
At 65 I retired, and apart from writing and illustrating a children’s book titled “WHEN ALEX GOT STUCK TO THE TOILET” I haven’t taken on any more commissions.
I recently found the deaths of Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston very sad and decided to paint them onto two 80cm x 80 cm canvas’s. I followed these with Marilyn Monroe. I have been amazed by the amount of interest shown in these paintings, particularly by younger people. I intend to temporarily, come out of retirement and reproduce these onto a small limited edition canvas print, after painting three male singers. Maybe Elvis, Michael Jackson and Ray Charles.
Geoff Wood does not have any artworks on show at the moment.
