Artist Georgina Gibbons

I am a full time pet portrait and wildlife artist, specialising in pastels.

I loved art from a very early age and it was always my favourite subject at school. I went on to take a degree in graphic design but due to lack of encouragement from my tutors I abandoned art for a career in marketing. Having always been an animal lover, it was my own dog that finally inspired me to take up art again and in 1991 I created a portrait of her in coloured pencils – my first animal portrait. In 1998 I tried pastels, fell in love with the medium and discovered my true passion for drawing animals.

I painted several animal portraits for family and friends over the years, while working full time. In 2009 I decided to actively seek commissions, created a website and attended events promoting and demonstrating my work. It proved very successful and in 2010 I gave up the “day job” and am now a full time artist.

Much of my work is pet portraiture, often for someone who has just lost their beloved companion, and being able to give them a beautiful memento means almost as much to me as it does to them. I work quite intuitively, which is very helpful when painting animals that have sadly passed. I have successful completed more than 200 pet portrait commissions.

Wildlife art presents me with a different creative challenge, but for both types of art my objective is to bring out the spirit and personality of the individual subject and to portray my deep appreciation of its beauty. I attend several exhibitions throughout the year and limited edition prints of my work are available.

At the start of 2011 I was lucky enough to go on safari to the Maasai Mara in Kenya and this was an unbelievable experience that has given me so much inspiration and even more passion for wildlife.

I was also thrilled to get through to the finals of the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition 2012 in the category of Endangered Species and in 2011 in the category of British Birds.
