| I have been developing my "meditative" approach to the creation of art since the Seventies (with the tongue in cheek title of Ionist Art). My early work comprised of evolving image sequences within complex controlling structures. The structures were derived from the sciences, mathematics, music, theatre and other disciplines. Much of this work was pioneering and I was one of the first artists in the UK to explore the science-art overlap. This work subsequently expanded into a great variety of innovative styles.
Since the beginning of the current decade I have been most interested in applying these principles to other painting genres. I am attempting to invent a new landscape and portrait tradition using symbols and diagrams instead of a more direct presentation of the scene before me. Using this technique I hope to provide a more holistic portrayal of the subject.
