Born and bred in North East England into a working class family, I worked in a variety of jobs including spending a few years in the British Army with the Coldstream Guards. At 21 I left the Army and became the youngest Ministry of Defence security manager in the country.
After qualifying and gaining experience as an artist, illustrator and tutor, I opened Hawthorn Arts, a visual arts company with my wife and business partner.
The company consists of visual arts retail, education and outreach. The early years mostly revolved around building a reputation for high quality participatory arts workshops.
I have worked with a diverse range of clients, such as local authorities, National Trust, English Heritage, schools, museums services and archaeological trusts.
My work has been used in books, academic papers, museum displays and information panels throughout the country.
Art has aways been a part of my life. I sold my first piece when I was 15 - a 'pet portrait' for a neighbour. My early career focussed largely upon archaeological and reconstructional illustration. My work gained acclaim due to the realism I portray. I primarily used watercolour and gouache.
Recently I have begun working more in fine art, painting larger canvasses using oil and acrylic. I never really had the urge to exhibit much, preferring to work on 'word of mouth' commissions. However, now the time feels right to unleash my work upon the world so most days will find me painting in my studio in preparation for a relatively large, touring solo exhibition beginning in Durham in Novermber 2011.
