“In the studio I am mixing colour, working on canvas,
creating from the inside out, breathing the smell of the paint,
broadly drawing lines and filling spaces, creating images,
translating emotions.
Painting, is for me, a physical act that transforms internal dialogues.”
I make contemporary paintings on canvas in oil and acrylic, often using text and printed paper.
My interests and influences include mythology, literature urban graffiti folk art, graphic/design elements
and colour, whether restricted to subtle harmonies or bold juxtapositions.
Working with acrylics in the early stages of a work speeds up the painting process, often producing accidents/challenges I can respond to and incorporate into the final work. The freedom and loose qualities of the acrylic stage keep the paintings fresh and immediate.
I work in series of related paintings exploring themes that have included the North Norfolk landscape, liver disease, Jenny Holzer’s truisms and mythology - Native American and Greek/Roman.
I exhibit locally from my studio and group shows, I have been selected 9 times since 1986 for the East Anglian Open. For Salthouse 05 and Salthouse 10. In Norwich at the 18/21 Gallery, group show, The Forum, solo and group shows, I was selected for Elements 2010, and exhibited with The Macrobiology Research Dept. of the UEA both of these events at The Forum in the centre of norwich. My work was selected for The Assembly House, Flying Colours Fabulous Forms regional group show. I have also shown work in Odeciexe Portugal, at the dfn Gallery Broadway New York and in London at the Barbican Concourse, the Loggia Gallery Buckingham Gate, The Mall Galleries and The Brick Lane Gallery. I have also had work accepted but not hung for the Royal Academy Summer Show.
