My work draws inspiration from the colour, texture and mood I find in my subjects. Landscapes, architecture and botanical subjects are given a semi-abstracted treatment using watercolour, pencil and pastel. Often a fascination with the subject will result in it being painted many times, variations being developed from peculiarities in the initial wash.
I was born in County Durham and trained at Loughborough College of Art and Design, leaving in 1982 with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Textile Design. I moved to South Wales in 1984 and have lived in Cardiff most of that time.
I have been a member of the group of artists and makers who have run the Cardiff Gallery, Oriel Makers, since 1991. I show my work in a number of galleries and have held summer exhibitions every year in Oriel Makers, which represents a large body of my work. I have participated in charity exhibitions and auctions and have taught painting classes in adult education.
I took some time out in 2003 to travel to India, Ireland and Italy which provided much inspiration for my paintings. I do feel that our coastlines in Wales, especially Pembrokeshire, take some beating and continue to inspire me with their timeless beauty. |
