Holly Pereira's work investigates how we create, perceive and maintain identities; cultural, racial and family. Pereira explores her Singaporean heritage through the lens of half- ang mo (or white Westerner) while investigating notions of female stereotypes, roles and characters, and in particular that of the Asian woman.
She is fascinated by the weird, the unusual, and the bizarre. Taking references from German fairy tales, Kung Fu films and the popular press, she creates images that are both disarming and slightly disturbing.
Pereira’s point of reference could be summarised in the phrase, “Same Same but Different”. This refers to a South-East Asian maxim of how cultural differences and divides do exist, but essentially we are all humans; we are all the same.
In September 2008 she undertook a three month residency in Post-Museum, Singapore, supported by the Arts Council of Ireland. This culminated in a show in December 2008 entitled Same Same but Different . This work (painting and drawing) was a response to her re-familiarization with all things Singaporean. Having grown up Asian in aspect, but Western in mindset, in Singapore she began to realise the full extent of what it means, to her, to be “Eurasian”. The exploration of the conflict of cultures in her work is a major theme and essentially the impetus to keep producing art.
