Huajin Qiu, also known as Peter Huajin Qiu, is a contemporary artist based in England.
He started painting in ink on paper at the age of eight when his parents decided to send him to two folk artists to learn Chinese calligraphy which they believed would focus him and help him improve his concentration. His parents were right. Qiu did not only become more patient and concentrated at school, more importantly, painting became a significant part of his life and has been ever since. Qiu was fascinated with Chinese calligraphy and painting. He spent most of his free time practicing his brushing skills. At the age of fifteen he was already a master of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting.
During his time spent in high school and university (2000-2007), Huajin Qiu continued studying western fine art by teaching himself and continued practicing Chinese Calligraphy. He believes no one can teach him art but he himself. In his mind genuine art is something unique, discovered or created by an individual who should be called an artist, consciously or unconsciously in order to visually convey his inner self to the outside world. During this time he also worked as a painter and graphic designer in the school studios. His paintings incorporated features known from traditional Chinese abstract art illustrating the beauty and energy of strokes and fuelling the imagination of his audience.
In 2008 he brought his calligraphic artworks to the UK. In 2009, he created a new set of brushing systems based on the shape of wood, waves, stones, flowers, to name a few, which gave him a more comprehensive way of conveying his ideas. He won the award of Excellence in the 2nd UK national Chinese Calligraphy Competition 2009 by UKAPCE. He held his first UK solo exhibition entitled “Spring Passion” in a shopping mall in Preston. His calligraphic paintings such as IT’S ALWAYS A GREAT HAPPINESS TO HAVE A VISITING FRIEND FROM FARAWAY, to name only a few are representative quality works.
In 2010 and 2011 colour composition became Huajin Qiu’s central artistic focus. His fascination currently lies with fusing Chinese calligraphy and Western abstract expressionism. He created a new painting approach called “art-body autopsy” in which Chinese Calligraphic Characters are painted in strong black acrylic as a basic structure of his paintings. He defines this as the “bone and soul” of the artwork body. Carefully composited colours fill the gaps between the characters and strokes of one character while diverse stroking techniques are used to complete a painting. He describes the colours composited in this step as the “flesh and skin” of the artwork body. In 2011 he held two solo exhibitions in the Mystery Tea House and the Equator Art Gallery in Preston, Lancashire. His recent works, mostly inspired by his dreams, which consists of such paintings as I Listen, Frozen Fire, Wine Club, I Grow A Rainbow On My Head and A Borrowed Dream have reputation as “Art of Gold”. Exploring encouraging images and pleasant fantasies, his artwork has become highly sought after, doubling in value in the past year. He has now involved in some big exhibitions in some famous galleries both in Uk, America, and China.
Huajin Qiu was born in Fujian, China. He lives and works in his home studio in Preston, England.
