Irina Corduban

Artist Irina CordubanI have always enjoyed Art from an early age. I can remember spending most of my childhood just drawing and being inspired to make and design anything and everything! This love of Art has stayed with me and developed and grown and, now, I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else. Studying art is the only thing I can see myself doing, and I have always wanted to work as art teacher because it has always felt like the right direction for me to take. I start my study in art at Oc Bancila High School, National College of Art, Iasi Romania, where I achieved GCSE A levels. At University of Art “G.Enescu”, Iasi Romania I have completed a BA in Fine Art, whilst there, and I enjoyed this extremely. I found this course very challenging but rewarding as I had grown in my understanding of the art discipline. I am currently completing an MA Fine Art at Westminster University. This two-year course has been very beneficial to me as I feel I have developed my skills within Art and have gained an understanding of the various disciplines within Art and Design. This course has led me to my decision to specialise within communities art work. Keeping in touch with the art community is vital for me, it is a community where no matter where you live or whatever your background, you can meet with like minded people to interact with and discus views ,exchange ideas learn new things, find new artists and see new exhibitions. I enjoy visiting Art Galleries and exhibitions. I am particularly interested in figurative portraiture and traditional drawing and painting. I have recently revisited an exhibition about drawing styles at National Portrait Gallery and V&A. I go there very often because there were varied styles and approaches to drawing and painting. My degree has trained me to cover National Curriculum in Art, Media and Design subjects, and my subject specialisms are Art (drawing and painting). Art is part of my life, for me teaching art involved education or transforming others through drawing. As a teacher and artist I used drawing as a teaching tool. Why we are drawing? Because we love to do so or when we discover the “alphabet” of drawing we will find the satisfying means of self-expression. Drawing is a direct response to the visual stimuli of our surroundings. Like writing, drawing is a skill which can be acquired. To learn to draw all you need to do is to look at the thinks, analytically and objectively. You can view drawing as a necessary foundation skill for painting. It does not matter which medium you use, but it is rewarding to experiment with different media. Drawing is a visual subject where easily you can monitor yourself, for this reason in my art lessons student draw by them. Always I remind them that drawing is different from many other subjects they learn. In my teaching I never try to get students to draw in particular way, because from experience, I understand that teaching art has both its rewards and challenge. For those of us that choose art, it is not a career or a hobby, but a passion, a way of life. There is no right or wrong in art and it can be translated a million different ways. We all see the world differently, and when I take a moment to look around me, my mind starts to buzz with ideas about my material surroundings. I enjoy being creative and see art as a natural way to express myself. I particularly enjoy drawing and how this allows me to create images in a way that I see them. I enjoy working in a figurative and detailed way and I aim to make my work expressive and visually interesting through tone and mark-making. My goal is to become a recognised artist, and regardless of what career moves I make, this will always remain. I have already put a lot of work into achieving that goal, and I know that there is a lot more work to come. I am interested in exploring the roles of an artist as practitioner and researcher. My favourite material to work with is fresco and egg tempera, I also enjoy working with paints, mosaic, acrylic, oil, collage and I have recently begun to develop an interest in resin and cast. I get inspiration from many places, be it a song, an expression or a stranger in the street. I carry a notebook with me to sketch ideas, as I am afraid they will float away as quickly as they arrive. I do commissioned work on an individual basis, which I love. I love having a project to focus on at all times, to give me focus and goals and to inject my never ideas into.
