Irma’s art career started in high school when she did portrait studies for pocket money, and at the age of 16 she was already teaching art. Irma has studied under artists like the late Mary Marsecano, Wimsy van Wyk, Marianne Weymouth and the reclusive Gordon Legg. She admires the work of the old masters, and loves painting people – especially woman and children. She enrolled for her degree in visual arts at UNISA in 2001.
Irma paints in a Super Realistic style in Water Colors and Oils. This technique has drawn attention to her Water Color paintings, since very view South African Artists paint in this style with water colours. In a review, Timothy Twidle writes: “The stand-out painting of the exhibition is by Irma Strydom… her work shows just how forceful watercolour painting can be and sold almost immediately on the opening night.”
However, early in 2011, Irma’s work has entered an experimental stage, influenced by artists Itzchak Tarkay, Joseph Matar and Imil Nolde.
One of Irma’s buyers is Mr. Tito Mbonweni, Previous Governor of the South African Reserve Bank.
Irma's current and pending commissions include Portrait studies of the President of Mozambique and his business associates.
