I began painting just before Easter 2008. I had dabbled with paints before that and even bought an easel which I did not use. I came from an artistic background. My father was a well known Caribbean artist but I really feel that the way I express myself is influenced more by my mother, a Welsh woman. Prior to painting I made all kinds of stuff from cloth and this is something I would like to get back to one day. I am also a published writer. My art, like my writing has a colourful intensity, is multi- layered and paradoxical - it seems to be one thing but is another. It is also imperfect and somewhat quirky. Being imperfect it inspires people to go away and paint. I don't feel like I have a particular style but I guess it could be called folk art. Since I sold those first paintings I've been doing pretty well, in developing my art and sales. I am against a culture of elitism in the arts and in writing and I've kept my work affordable to just about anyone. I don't think I'm precious about my work and I think I see art as a process, kind of like a journey to somewhere, but don't know where. Oh! I especially like themes of home, the feminine and crows. I quite forgot! I am self taught and use acrylic paints and paper collage. I like experimenting with other mediums as well.
I was born in London and have travelled to Africa several times but now I live in Wales. I trained as a teacher but decided instead to teach my own four children at home. They are all grown up and gone now. I live with my partner who loves philosophy and I tutor primary age children.
Most of my paintings have been sold from two local cafes in Llandudno and a few from my home. A couple of years ago, before I began painting I was involved with an exhibition called A Home Made Life where I recreated my home in an exhibition space. We had quilts, cloth dolls, a few of my early paintings, my children's work, an armchair, a sewing machine and all kinds of bits and pieces that went with that. We served food and it was an absolutely electrifying experience seeing the light in peoples' eyes was incredible. I have been put on a list here for another exhibition but it is a year or so away.
