The Family Of The Dead are a creative collective founded by myself, a freelance artist and designer, James Bebbington.
I have been creating art for several years under the guise of an underground street art inspired persona D.I.E.cast, however The Family Of The Dead were born from an artistic block that I had whilst trying to engage my first private commission. This can be every freelance artists personal hell, I on the other hand knew that I had a firm group of friends who I could call upon and each one had a different creative attribute to the group.
During the initial stages of the first commission we all got around a table with a few glasses of wine and discussed the direction of the piece, possible imagery, colour usage and each person had and still has a valid contribution to the overall finished piece. Although I am the chief artist for The Family Of The Dead, without the rest of 'The Family'....poets, musicians, authors and of course fellow artists, the first commission would never have been completed.
The Family Of The Dead are a true group of people who all strive for a common goal of creativity and design, each has their own skill and each is a valued member of the team. As a classically trained artist I believe that I followed the normal path of people before me and never actually did anything with my talents, at the time you are forced to recreate different style of artwork through the classic periods and not being one for conformity, I really wasn't happy about this. It wasn't until about ten years ago when I picked up my paintbrush, just to pass the time of day, that I realised just how enjoyable creating something for yourself could be. Not being governed by guidelines and what techniques you must follow really connected with me and from then on in I was hooked. I developed different interests in different medias and just had a ball experimenting with different styles, just like a true artisan. You may guess from the gallery that I have a penchant for fluo spray paint and skulls, but it's what I like, and strangely enough, other people like it also, which is a bonus.
From the humble beginnings of selling pieces on e-bay for a pittance, through to creating private custom artworks for a hell of a lot more, through to hiring studio space to keep up with the demands and being the most requested artistic group to exhibit locally and right through to being 'on-sale' in three galleries at the same time.....one thing is still for sure, The Family Of The Dead are not in this for the fame and the fortune, they are here due to their own hard work and determination to succeed. The financial side is a sideline, what we mostly strive for and get pleasure from is when one, singular person, looks at our work, and say's to themselves, 'I love that piece, I want it on my wall'.....then we know we have made it...that one person is like us, shares our mindset, views and outlook on life and the artistic world....and that one person from there on in is our family....our 'Family Of The Dead'.
