James was born in 1946 in the then small town of Irvine in north Ayrshire Scotland and learnt how to paint from his father using oils and although finding this satisfying knew that something was not right with this medium for him. After a period of time at the age of 32 James at last found what he was looking for and started to make 3 dimensional pictures using the medium of annealed copper film – Repousse’ the art of reverse embossing of metal. This is now one of his passions.
The other is the combination of digital photography and digital painting.
James has been painting using this method starting with digital photography and then developing this into his own art form of impressionism and exploiting the aspects of the digital painting medium embracing and showing the painterly aspect, rather than trying to hide the act of creation now for approximately 4 years and finds this a most satisfying experience.
Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software. This is done directly on a PC, by using a Wacom tablet, a stylus pen and ArtRage painting software. The Wacom tablet can be compared to a canvas or watercolor paper surface. The stylus pen is the paintbrush. The artist uses painting techniques to create an impressionistic digital painting directly on the computer.
Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model.
The passion for art has produced a varied portfolio of art for James. His greatest passion though is for horses and figurative work.
