Artist Jamie Tanner (Jet)

I'm a self taught artist, who has been a graphic designer for the past 21 years, designing book covers. I'm used to taking briefs, but it is far more rewarding for me to produce my own artwork, this allows me to express myself, and the ideas and images that I have for other people to see and hopefully enjoy. I am very keen on word plays, and love a good quotation. I also like to add a bit of humour to a lot of my work. From my graphic background i'm drawn towards bright, iconic everyday objects that are in our lives constantly, but we may never look at them in an artistic way. Objects like Coke cans, to simple functional traffic cones. Its not just the objects, but how they interact with the word play, that gives them a life of their own, and hopefully makes you smile. I wanted to get away from the digital avenue, but still use the knowledge I have acquired over the past 21 years, so I use the computer to compose and work out my stencils, then get onto the hands on part of letterpress printing and airbrushing. I love the replication side of imagery, that is why the medium I work in is some form of hand printing mixed with stencil work, that way they have an individual and unique quality to them, with slightly different colour and ink variations which means no one print is the same as the other. I believe that this is what owning art is all about, having something that no one else has. It is the little mistakes that make something unique, original and valuable.
