Indian born and raised, lived in the US for several years, Jazmine Labana (Jazmin), now based in London, has considered art her only real and spiritual companion in her emotional and physical journey in life. She experiments with different forms, objects, and subjects in her art, but mainly works on what could be an artistically contradictory and culturally controversial portrayal of Indian women. The women in her paintings are melancholic and mysterious with a powerful physical intensity and subtlety of form. The strong strokes in Jazmin's paintings convey vibrations, memories, ambivalent feelings and deep emotions as reflected in the positions and expressions of the figures. Her Indian background reflects in her unconventional and contemporary approach to pose, dynamic composition and colour. These works of art are modern, proud, vibrant and uniquely individual.
A self-taught artist, Jazmin has sketched and painted since her childhood. She has always considered art as very personal, and has never created any of her work for commercial reasons, but only for herself and her soul. Because she considers her art as her spiritual companion, she never believed in trying to sell her work. She believes that art has the power to change lives, one’s own as well as others. Now that she has decided to sell her art she wants her creativity to have a purpose. To that end she wants it to positively contribute to social issues that are important to her, and need immediate attention. She is committed to sharing a portion of the proceeds from her sales to charity organizations assisting children and vulnerable women around the world.
