Joanna Stevens grew up on a farm in west Cornwall and spent many hours sketching outdoors, drawing the wildlife and farm animals which included shire horses, geese, goats, a donkey and a welsh pony!
Jo went on to study Illustration at art college in Cornwall for three years and it was whilst at college that she developed her own unique style of illustration using high quality coloured pencils. The cornish fishing villages and harbour life are an important element of her pictures, portrayed using bright and cheerful colours that give a joyful atmosphere to Jo's work.
The sounds and varying moods of the sea are also a source of constant inspiration. Jo creates paintings using oil on canvas with mixed media to capture the essence of the sounds and soft melodies of the ocean.
Life drawing and the interpretation of the human figure is also of importance in Jo's art. She seeks to capture a feeling of joy and movement in her figure studies.
