Starting from photographs, I make a sketch, simplifying and exaggerating the facial features and surroundings.
I work quickly with a palette knife on several pictures at once, building up layers of paint and sometimes scraping it off and starting again. I return to the original sketch and make amendments allowing the piece to evolve naturally. I never have a set idea of what the finished painting will look like on completion before I start.
My paintings are mainly auto-biographical, most recently of my children - running in or out of the sea, climbing trees or just making faces.
I also sell my work directly to the public at markets and fairs.
