I was born in Somerset in 1970 but have spent most of my life in Cornwall, where I now live with my wife on the edge of Bodmin Moor.
For as long has I can remember, art and wildlife have been focal points in my life beginning in early childhood when doodles of sharks and dinosaurs spilled over on to the pages of my school books. Several formative years spent in Australia and New Zealand opened my eyes to a wider view of nature and many of my most vivid memories of that time concern wildlife – red-back spiders, koala bears, snakes in dustbins, all of which made a big impression on a young boy from England.
I would consider myself primarily a self-taught artist, but one whose technique was shaped by my time at art school. In 1991, after completing a 2-year foundation course at Falmouth, I won a place on a specialised Wildlife & Natural History Illustration course at Carmarthen College in Dyfed, Wales. Here, direct observation from nature was actively encouraged, with an emphasis on animal behaviour and anatomy.
In the last ten years, my travels across Britain and Europe have greatly inspired my work, especially the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye, Perthshire and Loch Tay areas. Of course The West Country is dear to my heart also.
I have exhibited across England including the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art and for the Wildlife Art Society, and held a number of solo exhibitions in Cornwall. I have also sold work on both sides of the Atlantic and as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and regularly teach classes in wildlife art and oil painting.
I am also interested in traditonal music, both British and American and am currently working on a series of portraits of banjo players, fiddle players, uilleann pipers etc which will be appearing in my gallery soon.
In January 2008 I was selected as a Signature Member of the Artists for Conservation, one of the world's leading collectives of wildlife and landscape artists. The aim of the Foundation is to raise the profile of conservation issues worldlwide through the medium of art and so far 11 million dollars have been pledged by it's members
