Born in 1945 John Brooks lived in Bath and studied the History of Building and Architecture enthusiastically including trips to Denmark where the contemporary architecture was of great interest to him. Other icons of modern architecture to attract his interest were Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. Throughout the 1960’s he was a dedicated photographer of architecture and landscapes and perfected the process of developing and printing his own film and prints. He also started to use a movie camera, mostly in hard to find monochrome film, primarily a Russian brand!
At the age of 21 he purchased his first Rollieflex, a departure from the single lens reflex cameras used by him previously. It was then that he experienced his “road to Damascus” and gained a new perspective, so to speak, of seeing composition, and for the first time in colour rather than monochrome.
Over the next few years he experimented with colour and composition including a number of montage prints and multiple print compositions ( as only recently adopted by Hockney).
A number of solo exhibitions of his work were staged in the 1970’s in mainly Bath and Bristol, including Co-existence Design Centre, Bath and London, and the Photographers Gallery Over the Rainbow in Bristol.
In 1977 he was invited to exhibit at the “On Site” exhibition held at the new Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol alongside artists such as Richard Long and Jan Dibbets whose work he greatly admires. His work was favourably received and had good reviews in Artscribe Magazine.
His work has recently been exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy of Art in the Open Photography 2 Exhibition and the 159th Annual Exhibition in 2011. He has ongoing exhibitions in USA.
Over the last 30 years or so he has when his main career permitted, travelled extensively through North America, Europe and Asia and Cuba, and North Africawhere he has created some unique and very interesting work based upon the local urban and rural landscapes of these regions. These have variously been collected by private individuals and used for commercial purposes in publications and exhibition material.
His book "Hidden in View - Photography 2011" was published.
His personal view is that photography is a challenging artform and one that should not be "picturesque" but should stand on its merits of compostion, tone and colour apart from the subject matter. The subject matter should accurately reflect the context of the location and ideally make a statement about it or force the viewer to think about what is happening. The finished work is not just decorative but needs to provoke and inspire in addition to being an interesting or enjoyable visual experience.
His work is now available publicly as finished prints in limited and unlimited editions depending upon the particular subject matter and print size. We hope you will appreciate and enjoy them as many others have before.
