Nature is often an inspiration and painting for me is an intuitive process in terms of manipulation of paint and use of certain colours and marks. I am not concerned with depiction in the sense of true representation but rather with the process and the material of painting itself. I intentionally try to avoid photography and even observational sketches in favour of notes and visual memory that I would refer to during the painting process.
Nature has a mysterious feel to it that I’d like to capture. I want my paintings to have a subtle enigmatic sense of mystery and suspense.
Oil is my favourite medium as its qualities and slow drying time fits perfectly with the way I work. I like to apply thin glazes and washes and thus, each painting is often created over several days. My aim is to make an image appear out of luminous, translucent layers of colour.
I consider myself self-taught although I’ve recently completed Foundation in Art and Design (Liverpool Community College, 2009-2011).
Originally Russian, I’ve been living in New Zealand, Australia and Spain and currently I’m living and working in Oxfordshire (UK).
