Kay trained at Goldsmiths College of Art London before embarking upon a career in Theatre Design and Costume Construction. She has worked at Saddlers’ Wells, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Crucible Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, Derby Playhouse and The Edinburgh Festival. She has enjoyed working with companies such as Ballet Rambert, London Contemporary Dance and Channel 4.
Kay works from her Studio in Nottinghamshire, creating Abstract paintings which are richly coloured and textured. The paint is applied thickly to build an interesting layered surface and various other media are applied including Oil, Acrylic, Gold leaf, Inks, Glazes and collage. Some of her more traditional paintings and textile creations hint at Folk Art and Fairy Tale.
" The Theatrical influence comes through strongly in my work, pieces are bold, atmospheric and there’s a feeling that they are fragments from another time or place, sometimes they may trigger an emotion, a memory of a piece of literature or music or a place in the imagination."
Kay also produces textile pieces (to commission as they are time consuming) and is a children’s Illustrator.
