I started painting back in 2006. My partner was given a starter kit of oils and acrylics. He began with the acrylics and has progressed to produce some fine work. Inspired by his efforts I started to use the oils. It quickly developed into a compulsion and I found myself painting in every spare moment. At first my work was sketchy and unskilled but slowly it began to take shape. Friends commented on my progress, which spurred me on to paint even more. I became interested in the Bob Ross style and soon I was painting mountains and trees effortlessly. Then I began to develop my own style, which is a mixture of Ross and myself. Like the visionary William Blake, I was transported by powerful images flooding into my mind. It was as if they were urging me to paint them. Sometimes the landscapes would be alien and strange, with weird fauna and flora growing in vivid colour; occasionally I would see serene and tranquil scenes, places where I imagined I could escape to and relax; and now and then mysterious real-life incidents would explode into life. I tried to capture them all. Painting was rapidly becoming a sort of therapy as well as a means to convey the images that were swirling around in my head. Sometimes I wonder whether I am painting the pictures or some metaphysical force is working through me. Whatever, it is the perfect outlet for my creativity. I sign all work with the initials KTH, which represents my name, Kim T Harvey.
