I am very interested in investigating the unconscious through my art. I like to study Carl Jung and love his writings, thoughts and philosophies on the psyche, particularly 'Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious'. Very often archetypal images appear in my work and fantasy is a genre I enjoy although I love to experiment in many ways and seem to have just as many styles. I love Picasso’s quote ‘God made the cat, the elephant, the giraffe. He has no real style he just keeps on trying things.....’
Originally my intention was for my work to tap into my psyche and resonate with the unconscious mind of the viewer. My aim was to take a journey through my own unconscious and reveal some of its contents visually by any method that I found effective. I am still interested in this and would be happy to achieve such a connection with the viewer through my work but I have now also become very interested in studying other artists and attempting to master some of their techniques in a more formal way. As well as Carl Jung and my interest in the unconscious I am influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Victorian Artists, The Surrealist movement, Abstract Surrealism and at the moment am studying techniques used by the Great Masters such as Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. I am also studying anatomy, colour and light. The artist that I am particularly enjoying and studying at the moment is Marcel Duchamp. This keeps me busy but I’m constantly distracted by other subjects which is why I think my work changes style so frequently.

I started studying psychology a long time ago on my first degree when I became interested in the Surrealist Movement. I later went on to take various courses in foundation psychology and couselling. When I was a Special Needs teacher I studied Art Therapy and Psychotherapy at the INSTITUTE FOR THERAPY IN ART AND EDUCATION based in Islington. It was quite an experience especially as a great deal of it was studying my own psyche intently. I learnt so much about myself which led to a greater understanding of others and how our minds and emotions work. In my opinion one of the most important aspects of art is to express and communicate our emotions effectively. I suffer from bi-polar disorder which I think has motivated me to try and understand how the mind works. I am also now physically disabled but thankfully am able to continue to paint and am planning to have another one man exhibition in the near future.
