Born in Belgium in 1967, I was brought up in the North East of England from the age of 8. I went on to gain an O.N.D. in Art and Design at the Marine Technical College in South Shields. Graduating, I moved to Kent to take a H.N.D. in Fashion Design at the Medway College of Art and Design and concluded my education at Middlesex University gaining a BA (HONS) in Illustration in 1999. Having lived and worked in London for more than 20 years, I have now relocated to York.
On leaving University, I secured a job with the BBC as a freelance technical assistant/ graphic designer at Television Centre for 5 years. In a change of direction, I have since been teaching adult life drawing and children's art clubs at both primary and secondary levels. I continue to teach alongside producing and selling my own art work.
I have undertaken a range of private commissions. Clients include Manya Igel Fine Arts Ltd., BBC Radio 4 and The London Women's Clinic, Harley Street, London. In addition my work has been exhibited in Paper Passions Gallery, Richmond, Candid Arts, Islington, London and the BBC, Television Centre, London. I have also exhibited and sold work at the Mall Galleries, Pall Mall, London.
My work is frequently influenced by vivacious french poster art and images of the 1940s and 50s. Having French ancestry and being brought up on a diet of black and white films has engendered a keen interest in society portraiture, bold vivid flat colour and exquisite line drawings. Toulouse Lautrec, Egon Schiele, Carl Ericson, and more recently Dave McKean and Milt Kobayashi are amongst those artists who have informed my style.
My current work combines traditional drawing with digital collage. Both the drawings and backgrounds, either printed or painted, are scanned and overlayed digitally. Sometimes I choose to apply the colour digitally and remove the original line. The outcome is to imitate the lithographic poster art of the 1900s through to the 1950s. The content however is contemporary, often demonstrating the struggle between an idealised Hollywood glamour and the realities of everyday life. I hope to blend the romance and beauty of a past era with the energy and reality of life today.
I am also working on a series of original prints using the traditional linocut technique to bring a more authentic feel to my work and to satisfy my love of the printing press!
