 Lucia’s formal art training began in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the late 70's. Dramatic life changes then took her to Canada in 1980 where she subsequently spent a period of 10 years resulting in her graduation from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Following graduation, Lucia had several minor exhibitions of paintings and installations in Canada but she then returned to Ireland in 1990 to raise a family. Lucia now sees herself as an emerging artist, determined to re-capture the excitement she experienced all those years ago.
This recent body of work is based on an honest and intense exploration of the female form. Working in graphite and oil bars, this provocative collection of drawings is full of energy and tension, often described as figurative landscapes. Drawing directly from the model, Lucia sees her work as being ‘confessional’ in nature as it reflects feelings of anxiety, despair and often loneliness. Today she is strongly influenced by such artists as Jim Dine, Cy Twombly and Louise Bourgeois.
