Maddy Chatterton
After completing a degree in graphics and photography in 2010 I had experimented little with watercolours and canvas until January this year. Through a battle of anorexia and having been the victim of rape I once again turned to this medium as a means to communicate with, and sympathize the pain with other unfortunate victims . my art work started out dark but over time I began to paint things I consider beautiful, to remind myself and other victims that there is still beauty in this world,
There are some days that I cannot bear, when the hurt is too strong and a moment in time re-lives itself over and over. these are the days when the sinister and wicked are brought to life on my canvas. But, like all oceans there is sometimes calm, and in the darkness I remember the beauty of the world. Painting life, in all its glory, from a bird feeding on nectar and in turn pollinating new life to the simplicity of how a cow, by simply being a cow can put a smile up-on my face.
I see my art as something beautiful that comes from something so painful, and I feel my style shows vulnerability. There became a time when I realised that this thing could either destroy me or be the making of me. Now more than ever, I realise that art is my light in the dark. without it I would have little reason to be.
