 My name is Martin Smith. I am an artist who has always had a passion for realism.
Born into a family of academics it was inevitable that my interests would be of a more artistic leaning, and consequently my passion for art started from a very young age. Initially favouring pencil as my creative medium (or was it those colouring pen packs you always got at Christmas?), I soon branched out into watercolour, then eventually oil/acrylic painting.
I started work in a design studio and became disciplined in hand-painted commercial artwork. I strongly believe my early training days and studies At Liverpool Art College help me to appreciate the patience required to produce accurate precision painting. Consequently my early work was very detailed focusing mainly on architecture and light.
I have sold my work worldwide and have recently focussed on abstract art. This is an area that fascinated me from the outset so I continued to paint and sketch, favouring acrylic to produce both fine art and abstract paintings. These abstracts are my wife's favourites and a number of them have been "purloined" by her for display in her Pilates studio here in Carlisle. Each work is individually signed. The idyllic county of Cumbria with its national park “The Lake District" is a permanent resource of inspiration
The abstract paintings of late have a finishing technique i developed. The result is a beautiful gloss surface resembling glass, which leaves the painting very vibrant well protected. I use a variety of media but tend to favour acrylic
on quality pre-primed boxed canvasses.
I hope you like my work. I am very passionate about art, Pablo Picasso once said
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." It is a sentiment i share completely.
