Michael G. Blake

Born in Cheshire, I trained at Jacob Kramer College, Leeds and Canterbury College of Art where I was taught by Geoffrey Rigden. The late Tom Watt, Head of Painting at Canterbury, was an important influence. I have taught at Canterbury College of Art, the National School of Art in Dublin and at the Post Graduate College of Art in Lemba, Cyprus. "....his images are mostly hard-edged, reduced to a few areas and yet carrying a powerful expressive charge. It is difficult to see how this has been achieved. The work seems nervy and exposed and yet the paint is mostly handled in a plain matter-of-fact kind of way". Cuillin Bantock. "....Blakes canvasses exploit colours to suggest mood...every shift of hue tells; nothing is added for the sake of effect". Francis Spalding. "His paintings reverberate with his experience beyond the experience of painting itself". Peter Fuller.
