I began sketching at age 11, mainly animations after school. I realised that I thoroughly enjoyed drawing and so began to sketch anything in sight: my sister sleeping on the sofa! Media was something I knew little about so I would sketch in biro pens: red, black, anything colour really and HB pencils. At the age of 13 I became quite fashion conscious and took a huge interest in drapes and how shapes 'fall' over different objects: the contrast between light, shade and textures. I also tried my hand at portraits, drawing my favourite celebrity faces such as Canon and Ball and the '80's pop group Kajagoogoo. Both of which were autographed and I still have them in my possession! I then abandoned my art for roughly 18 years, busy with the pressures of life and family, until I lost my sight in both eyes due to Diabetes and needed major surgery, which although was successful, has left me with permanent damage. Being housebound and a single parent, life was difficult, depressing, so I decided to change the focus and embarked on painting a crawling ivy around my sitting room walls. I know, wierd. I battled with it of course due to the visual impairment and it took me six months, but I did it. The strain soon got the better of me and another ten years passed before I lifted a paintbrush. However, another traumatic event in my life forced me to employ my creative side this year: both parents became terminally ill due to Parkinsons and Motor Neurones Disease. I wanted to give them each something that stimulated their minds when I coudn't be with them and my art seemed to be the perfect remedy for personal healing, a way of breathing 'new' life into them. My work has been described as emotive, spiritual and uplifting and I have done a couple of commissions this year. My intention this time however, is to stick with it as a reminder of how art can change the way we think and the way we see things.
