Nick Dawson is a graduate of Fine Art, UWA Aberystwyth. From 2005 to 2006 he lived in Cyprus as artist-in-residence at the Cyprus College of Art (Limassol) and the work he produced there fell into two main categories. While figurative drawing remained central to his artistic practice, he also produced landscapes and seascapes in a more relaxed style of abstraction, inspired the rich colours and coarse textures of the island.
Since 2006 he has been teaching art in Essex, firstly to primary school children before moving on to teach secondary and sixth form pupils.
The new work for 2010 found here reflects Nick's changing attitude to living in the south of England, a place he now feels is his home, and also suggests a return to the subject of his Cyprus paintings.
Other work here includes examples from his 'Relative Influence' series of 2009, which depict abstractions inspired by chess moves, and action paintings from his 'Eden' series of 2008
As an artist Nick Dawson is known for going through phases of extreme activity, with seismic shifts in style and subject. Although 2010 seems to have brought a calmer, more focussed energy to his work.
Some of the work on display here was shown during Easter '09 at Faux Gallery & Studio in Leigh-on-Sea.
