NORMAN TWOHIG

Norman was born in the North of England in 1947. From his teenage years he had decided to become an artist briefly attending Art College but quickly became disillusioned with the approach of the college. He observed that many of the students entered with talent yet their work became homogenised by the process and the concepts of the teachers. The concepts being taught seemed dated and anachronistic. Norman decided to continue with his art and photography and to travel extensively. He set off in the early 1960’s first for Western Europe, the countries of the former Eastern Block, North Africa and the Middle East. He lived for some time in Morocco and then the Lebanon. This extended period of travel and living abroad gave him insight into art history and culture.

He returned to the UK and took a position working for one of the worlds premier dealerships of Chinese porcelain and Persian art, at Bluett and Sons in Mayfair London. The late 60’s were an exciting time in London and he lived in Hampstead developing a close friendship with Graham Chapman of Monty Python. Norman continued to develop his art and photography in conjunction with dealing in Islamic and oriental art. He moved to the USA and lived in Washington DC and was able to travel extensively in the USA which was inspirational in terms of his pursuit of natural wilderness locations for photography and abstract landscapes. During the 1970’s and 1980’s Norman travelled extensively in Canada and Australia, developing his particular vision for his abstract landscape painting.

During his stay in British Columbia on Canada’s west coast, he found great empathy with and from the First Nations painters and sculptors, who understood that art can be about the feelings and relationship with the subject and not how it looks. Norman believes that you enter the spirit of the landscape and become in harmony with that spirit. In place this harmony with the landscape, it is not conscious, as if a spirit guide acts as an interpreter for the emotions of the landscape. The act of painting expresses the emotions or energy of that particular place.

Norman’s work allows him to express the emotions he experiences as colour and texture from the landscapes. He prefers to be inspired by wilderness and unspoiled nature. He chooses to develop themes in series to explore the elements of particular locations. He has developed a series of works in the UK, the River Erme, Dartmoor, South Hams Coast and Neolithic stone circles around the British Isles and Ireland. In Canada Norman’s love and exploration of wilderness landscapes encouraged him to sail the coast of British Columbia from the border with Alaska to Vancouver, as a source of inspiration and research into the west coast rainforest. In Australia he travelled through the deserts and coastal scenery of the east and western seaboards. The artist continues to keep in touch with his friends among the Canadian native artists from British Columbia.

The in the mid 1980’s the artist returned to the UK and attended the London College of Printing in specialising in print making and lithography. He gained the attention of a number of serious UK art collectors who began to purchase his work. He moved to sooth west Devon and continues to travel widely. The artist likes to use bright colours in his work, sometimes with unusual colour combinations in order to express the mood emanating from a particular landscape. He takes a series of photographs as well as sketches, as well as painting at the location, where weather allows it.

Norman had exhibitions in Australia and Canada .

Norman is currently developing landscape themes in Italy, especially Venice and Tuscany and also the Adriatic coast of Croatia.
