Art is not so much something I 'do' but 'who I am' and 'how I live'. Whilst I do have education and qualifications in art, up to University level, I feel this only represents a tiny proportion of my artistic experience and doesn't necessarily validate me as an artist. For me, art is a means of creativity, self expression and a way to 'celebrate and explore' the things which inspire me.
I am inspired by 'none-tangible' things such as music, emotions and the enigmas of the universe, especially the mysterious link between spirituality, quantum physics, beauty and fractal maths, through to life's simpler, tangible treasures like vintage fashion, indlugent confectionery or an appealing object unearthed at a jumble sale!
My working method mixes technical drawing, painting and craft skills with improvised techniques and I utilise whatever combination of materials and methods I need to create my desired effect. My home houses an ever increasing collection of found objects, images, text and materials which can either act as sources of ideas or actually be used within peices of art work. I fill sketch books, scrap books, note books and photograph albums rapidly and am never without a pencil and paper.
I believe the mental health condition I experience (Bi-Polar) heightens and exaggerates my perception and experience of the world around me and art acts as an outlet for all the ideas, emotions and imaginings which smoulder in my mind and might otherwise consume me!
Having discovered for myself that a picture really does paint a thousand words, I set up and ran a project called 'Advocacy Through Art'. Through this, I facilitated art sessions for people who had various disabilities which created a barrier to verbal or written communication for them. The art sessions enabled them to communicate and express themselves through the art work they created. I feel this was one of the most valuable ways in which I have utilised my art to date.
Now, I hope that my art work will find it's way out into the world where it can exist as an 'interactive entity' by serving as a source of pleasure, expression or inspiration to people who find it appealing and who connect with it on whatever level.
